Description Material: Oak Period: Victorian Antiques Dimensions: 62cm Deep x 59cm wide x 121cm heightThis chair was bought from another Scottish Dealer who handled the House Clearance of Bomber Harris Scottish Home. This was his favourite Fireside Chair and you can see the soot from the fire on the lovely patinated leather seat. Bomber Harris was in charge of Bombing Command during the second World War and is a divisive figure in History. Some feel he went too far in the bombing campaigns of Dresden and Leipzig (leading to some calling him Butcher Harris) and others feel he was a hero who helped rubber stamp the victory. It is some weighty legacy he had to deal with and you can just picture him sitting in the chair nursing a dram whilst contemplating his significant historical role. There is some debate as to whether the chair is authentically Jacobean or a Victorian chair in the Jacobean style – some feel the wear on the arms show the chair is authentically Jacobean. What is not in doubt is the original intended use of the chair – a nursing chair. With the swept arms the mother or nurse maid, could sit comfortably in the chair and hold the baby safely whilst being nursed. I wonder if Bomber Harris was ever aware of the chair’s intended use !
