The success behind Baleia Wines lies in the location of their vineyards. Baleia is the only winery on the Lower Duiwenhoksrivier in Vermaaklikheid, which makes their wines unique in style. The accumulation of soil and limestone particles into a solid, crusted layer in which the vine roots struggle to reach water and minerals along with the high calcium content found in this layer of hardened soils naturally hinders the growth and mineral uptake of the vine. Syrah, which is naturally high in vigour, is beautifully shaped by this conglomeration effect, which positively stresses the vine to produce a wine of consequence that truly reflects sense of place.
